Abbas continues to fight on UN under threatened 44457610
NEW YORK - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday (09/23/2011), will continue its agenda, namely asking the Palestinians to be a member of the UN, amid protests in the West Bank against U.S. President Barack Obama.

"Our people demonstrated yesterday and today to express their feelings that the speech (Obama) does not meet the expectations of Palestinians to freedom and independence that the U.S. government appealed to everyone, except the Palestinians," said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erakat.

"That is why our people believe that the partiality of America (against Israel) did not support (resolving the Palestinian conflict)," said Erakat told AFP. "But although this position is unfair and a lot of pressure, President Abbas tomorrow will submit the proposal through the UN Security Council to recognize a Palestinian state."

Erakat confirmed, after filing the proposal, Abbas will return to the Palestinian territories "to study the options in a meeting of the Palestinian leadership, particularly related to the initiative put forward by French President Nicolas Sarkozy."

Palestinians are angry, Thursday, to protest in the streets of Ramallah and Gaza after Obama's speech at UN General Assembly considered without hesitate pro-Israel. More than 1,000 Palestinians carry the symbols which denounced Obama gathered outside the headquarters of Abbas in the West Bank before marching to the city center. They shouted, "It is a shame. Americans support the occupation."
In his speech, Obama again opposed the plan of Palestine to the UN proposal to be recognized as a member. Obama said only direct talks with Israel that could produce a lasting peace treaty between that country and Palestine.

President Sarkozy on the same day has submitted a plan to provide temporary status for the Palestinians as non-member observer country in the UN and set a timetable for the resumption of talks which will take place in a year.

Meanwhile, diplomatic adviser to Abbas, Majdi al-Khaldi, said the Palestinians believe they will get the nine votes needed in the Security Council to qualify to be accepted as a member state. However, he revealed, "Three members of the Security Council under U.S. pressure, namely Bosnia, Gabon, and Nigeria."
