CAIRO - A poll has shown that the majority of Egyptians would prefer the country to stop the agreement with Israel, reports the Press TV on Tuesday (25/04/2011).

Opinion polls, conducted by the Pew Research Center based in the United States, published on Monday (25 / 4), showed that 54% against the Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty, the Associated Press reported. The poll surveyed 1,000 people from all over Egypt between 24 March and 7 April.

Treaty of 1979 between Egypt and Israel containing the agreement pullback of Israeli troops from the Sinai Peninsula (part of Egyptian territory), which Israel occupied in 1967.

However, the agreement gives Israel a gap big enough to take advantage of the Egyptian security forces were placed in the Sinai which will cooperate with Israel in blockading the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, in January, the Egyptians managed to overthrow the regime of pro-Israel, president Hosni Mubarak, in power for 30 years.

After the revolution, the Egyptian protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in the capital, and burned Israeli flags and urged the expulsion of the ambassador of Israel, Yitzhak Levanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the Egyptian government could become an enemy of Tel Aviv if Israel's existence remains threatened. Netanyahu also worried by statements made by Egyptian Foreign Minister, Nabil al-Arabi, who along with other senior officials have reportedly called the Tel Aviv as an enemy of Egypt.

Egyptian Finance Minister, Samir Radwan, also stressed that Cairo does not require the investment of the "enemy", commenting on the possibility of economic relations with Tel Aviv.

Recent surveys also show that only 15% of respondents who liked the closer relations between Egypt with US-ally Israel's most powerful. This figure is smaller than the 43% of respondents who agreed that Egypt took the distance to deal with both countries.
