European diplomats supported the recognition of the Palestinian Al-Quds as its capital

The European foreign ministers will discuss and possibly next week to support the draft resolution calling for recognition of Al-Quds (occupied East Jerusalem) as capital of a Palestinian state in the future.

"The EU urges resumption of negotiations that will lead to a two-state solution is independent, democratic, contiguous and viable Palestinian state, which consists of the West Bank and Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital," read the bill, a copy was published by Haaretz on Tuesday (5/19/2011) ago.

Israel occupied the holy city of Al-Quds in the 1967 war and later annexed in a move not recognized by the international community or UN resolutions. European diplomats, however, said the European position, does not represent a radical change.

"This may be a way to encourage the Palestinians to enter negotiations," said a European official in Tel Aviv told the Christian Science Monitor.

He denied that the EU will recognize the unilateral declaration of establishment of a Palestinian state.

"I do not think Europeans are interested in the recognition of a Palestinian state now, before any negotiations. It's more like saying, if and when that happens, we will recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.
